Valve Actuator
An actuator is a type of motor that is responsible for moving or controlling a mechanism or system. It is operated by a source of energy, typically electric current, hydraulic fluid pressure, or pneumatic pressure, which is converted into motion. An actuator is the mechanism by which a control system acts upon an environment.
Type of Actuator
There are three main types of actuators – hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical.
Hydraulic
A hydraulic actuator consists of a cylinder or fluid motor that uses hydraulic power to facilitate mechanical operation. The mechanical motion gives an output in terms of linear, rotary or oscillatory motion. Because liquids are nearly impossible to compress, a hydraulic actuator can exert considerable force. The drawback of this approach is limited acceleration.
The hydraulic cylinder consists of a hollow cylindrical tube along which a piston can slide. The term single acting is used when the fluid pressure is applied to just one side of the piston. The piston can move in only one direction, a spring being frequently used to give the piston a return stroke. The term double acting is used when pressure is applied on each side of the piston; the difference in pressure between the two side of the piston moves the piston to one side or the other.
Pneumatic
A pneumatic actuator converts energy formed by vacuum or compressed air at high pressure into either linear or rotary motion. Pneumatic energy is desirable for main engine controls because it can quickly respond in starting and stopping as the power source does not need to be stored in reserve for operation.
Pneumatic actuators enable large forces to be produced from relatively small pressure changes. These forces are often used with valves to move diaphragms to affect the flow of liquid through the valve. It is responsible for converting pressure into force.
Electric
An electric actuator is powered by a motor that converts electrical energy into mechanical torque. The electrical energy is used to actuate equipment such as multi-turn valves. It is one of the cleanest and most readily available forms of actuator because it does not involve oil.
SUPREMAC SMG Series Scotch Yoke Valve Actuator
SUPREMAC actuator is known for its reliable, durable, smart and high performing actuators that suit many types of applications and specifications. SUPREMAC actuators can automate valves with torque values from 500 to 200,000 Nm. Actuators are available in a wide range of materials suitable for use in the most demanding applications.
A scotch yoke valve actuator for operating ball, butterfly or plug valves along with louvres, dampers and other 90 degree rotating mechanisms. Suitable for demanding SIL-required applications.
A) Wear Resistant
The piston is made of high-strength alloy steel which is highly corrosion and wear resistant. This surface finish when paired with self-lubricating bearings, allow maximum transfer of input energy directly to the valve stem. Efficiency is further enhanced by tension-loaded springs which minimize radial loads acting on the piston rod.
B) Durable
Supremac actuators are verified as service-rated, long-lasting equipment through accelerated wear testing. However, actual service life varies depending on application parameters and environmental conditions. Selection of a suitable actuator based on data analysis encourages an economically-optimized performance.
C) Integral Bearings
Supremac actuator life is further extended from the use of low friction, self-lubricating bearing with high performance.
D) Four Year Warranty
SMG-Series actuators are constructed from quality materials using skilled workmanship combined with engineering technology.
E) Corrosion Resistant
Protective internal and external coatings ensure the ability of the actuator to withstand harsh environments. The air cylinder is PTFE lined for corrosion resistance and friction reduction, and has undergone Salt Spray Testing. It is designed to prevent water ingress and meets IP66 and IP67M specifications. The cylinder case is PTFE lined for ease of operation and improved corrosion resistance.
F) Safety Integrity
A safety feature is added in to allow a safer installation and removal of the spring module to prevent accidental rebound from the force of the spring.
G) Interchangeability
Substitutable power and spring modules allow swift transitioning into ‘fail-safe’ mode and enables additions for overrides, accessories and other modules.
H) Modular Design
The field serviceable feature of the modules allow ease of removal and servicing without dismantling the actuator from the valve as no special tools and no module is required to be disassembled. Available modules are inclusive of the drive, power, spring and override.
I) Modular Inventory
Modules may be purchased separately or in any combination to reduce parts inventory at the distribution facility and simultaneously provide different model configurations.
J) Conformity to NAMUR Standards
Shaft-driven accessory interface conforms to NAMUR specification, thus allowing standardization of accessory mounting hardware and installation practices.
K) MSS-Specified and ISO-Specified Mounting
Conformance to the dimensional requirements of MSS SP-101 or ISO 5211 specified for each torque range.
L) Compact Design
Optimized design utilizes the location of the centre of gravity of the actuator, allowing it to be significantly lighter with less space usage compared to other actuators of equal or less torque output.
